ABOUT

Hi, I'm Kimberly.

& I HAVE TYPE 1

DIABETES MYSELF

I am like you and you are like me. I took the next step and decided to write my story going forward on my own terms and you can too. I am here to hold space, teach you to see your mind, and use those thoughts to create actions and new thoughts that will serve you better and allow you to not just live this one life but thrive at it.

MY STORY

I am a Family Physician who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just before my 39th birthday, Jan 30, 2020. It changed everything about my world. Then the pandemic hit and in March 2020 I now found myself in one of the highest-risk medical groups attempting to manage my career in a busy clinic.

I simultaneously became the patient (insulin injections, finger sticks, highs, lows, anxiety related to meals, critical hypoglycemia stress) and doctor during a global pandemic. My children were sent home for remote learning and their education included warning signs for mommy, reading food labels, and learning to dial 911. It was overwhelming and by the end of the year I was burnt out, exhausted, and barely staying afloat, I was looking for something more, a way to find myself again.

I sought out the physician mom community, the coaching community, and the wellness community and looked for different and inventive ways to engage with my patients. 2021 was a year of exploration for me and during it, I found that almost everyone was looking for something more intentional as well. The balance between family and career, fitness and nutrition, and mental and physical health was paramount.

I attended a wellness retreat in late 2021 and joined a year-long coaching program, and by the beginning of 2022, my curiosity for life coaching had grown.  While some sense of "normalcy" started to return in the first 3 months of 2022, I decided that I didn't want to go back to any of the "normal" I had previously known; I couldn't go back. I was grappling with a diagnosis that changed me and I was in no way the same person I was in 2019.

Type 1 diabetes changed everything about my world.

Type 1 diabetes changed everything about my world.

On the 2nd year anniversary of my diagnosis, I took myself to the beach, put my toes in the sand, watched the ocean waves, and wondered what it all meant. I decided much like the ocean, with its irregular rhythm of waves, sometimes barely making it to shore and other times crashing fervently, that my life could be chaos or it could be calm. Would the beach and those waves ease me or cause me to be afraid?

As a Southern California girl, the beach was calming and captivating and I couldn’t help but see a parallel to life coaching; it was the way to change my mindset about my new diagnosis and the new world I was living in.

...THEN I STARTED TO REALIZE THAT MANY OTHERS LIKE ME FACED A

new or ongoing chronic disease...

I changed how I thought about diabetes, my body, and my "limitations." I found more joy, more intention, and more of the old things that made me. Better yet, I realized new things that made me a version of myself I liked even better! I want to share this with all those who are barely treading above water so they can start to thrive as well, and that is where Coaching with Chronic Disease was born.
